All, I created another subgroup for Taxes, Finance and Accounting related discussions. Some of you may know the expert CA @bajajgitesh from our Upwork Huddle events.

I invited Gitesh Bajaj to share his knowledge and expertise on this platform and make it more exciting. I am open for more ideas on what other areas we can focus under TOW-India community.

Let’s make it as vibrant as our beautiful country.

Hey guys as Upwork deducts around 13% as commission and taxes do we have a way to get any tax refunds if we are filing NIL return?

@sagardesai 10% is Upwork commission on your earning, they deduct 1% as TDS (if you have provided PAN details), and GST in case you do not have GSTIN.

At the end of every quarter they report it to Income Tax Department (1% of your total income), you follow the process of income tax returns, if you are eligible for returns (like excess taxes paid) it will come to your account.

I don’t think it’s anything to do with Upwork.

Yeah, I did my taxes this year and that’s what my CA said but if we have GST number then I guess we can claim the GST charged too, right?

Sagar, I got my GST as well, frankly speaking I am yet to see any benefits. Consider cost of compliance, regular GST filing and fine for late (just in case).

GST makes sense only if your turnover is close to ~20 Lakhs

        Hello Sagar,
Nice that you started off the discussion. It all depends on your turnover… If you are near 20 lac, then I recommend taking GST registration. If not, then I would advice not too go for GST… There are a lot of administrative procedures to be followed. Hence if you are between 10 lac or say 15 lacs… Then the cost of GST procedures is more than the refund… But yup, to answer your query, we can go for refund.

Let me know what you think…
