Is Upwork Really That Competitive? The Surprising Truth for Freelancers
Let’s Get Real About Upwork
So, here’s what I’ve been hearing all over social media and freelancer groups:
- “Upwork is way too expensive; paying for Connects just drains me!”
- “Companies rig the system to overshadow individual freelancers!”
- “I’m top-rated, but I still can’t land gigs!”
Now, I’m not here to claim I’ve cracked some mystical code. I’m just sharing what I’ve seen work (and fail) out in the real Upwork world.
Yes, competition is no joke but it’s not the doomsday scenario some people make it out to be. Is it tougher than it was? Probably. Is it impossible?
Absolutely f*kin NOT.
What’s Worked for Me

Switch Up Your Greetings
Same old “Hello Sir/Madam” intros feel robotic and generic. Try a more personal touch or casual opener—anything that sounds genuinely you. Even when I am hiring for Adam I get greeting like Dear Hiring Manager, I mean this is Upwork and you are applying to a client and not a job in a 9-5 so keep your greetings real. The best greetings are addressing the client by name. -
Avoid Desperate Hooks
Over-the-top claims like “I’m the best freelancer you’ll ever meet!” usually backfire. Clients can sniff out insincerity from a mile away. Keep it real. -
Go Niche
Being a “jack of all trades” isn’t as appealing as it once was. Specializing in one area helps you stand out and attracts clients who value expertise. -
Embrace Algorithm Changes
Upwork tweaks their algorithm regularly, so don’t panic when your proposal views dip. Tweak your approach. Test different angles. Keep experimenting. -
Solve Their Problems
Clients care more about how you’ll fix their issues than reading a list of your skills. Focus on outcomes—they’ll appreciate the clarity.
