Freelancers, Let’s Talk About a Tragic Wake-Up Call: Freedom We Take for Granted
Few days ago, the world lost Anna Periyal, 26, a bright Chartered Accountant at big company called Ernst and Young, India.
Anna’s death has sparked a conversation throughtout the globe, especially the corporate world about something we all need to hear—especially those of us who have chosen the freelance path.
Anna’s story is heartbreaking. She didn’t die of illness, nor an accident. She died due to the office work pressure, stress, and the toxic environment she had to endure.
Her mother, in a letter to the chairman, poured her heart out, spotlighting the burden her daughter carried. She worked long hours, met impossible demands, and sacrificed her health-all for a company that did not even have the decency to acknowledge her death.
No one from her office even bothered to attend her funeral, and the chairman dismissed the claims of work pressure as the cause and instead said she was already ill.
Is this the kind of loyalty, respect, and care that anyone deserves?
Anna’s story is a harsh reminder of why we chose freelancing—why we took control over our time, energy, and lives. Freelancing is not a career choice; it is freedom. Freedom from toxic managers, freedom from unrealistic deadlines, and freedom from environments that take more than they give.
Being a freelancer makes us free to decide on projects that benefit us rather than sucking the life out of us, and to work anywhere, at any time. We’re not limited by cubicles or office politics.
We don’t have to bend ourselves to fit into toxic cultures that prioritize profit over people. Freelancing lets us design our work around our lives, not vice versa.
Anna’s story also serves as a wake-up call about the importance of self-care.It’s easy to get lost in the hustle, but even freelancing may prove to be sometimes overwhelming if not more.
Take time for yourself. Pause. Breathe. Rest. The work will always be there but your health and well-being is irreplacable.
The corporate world will replace people like Anna in a heartbeat, but they cannot fill the void she left behind for her family. Her death, more than a loss, is a lesson for all of us-a reminder that no job is worth our life.
So breathe and remember why we took this path. Don’t forget appreciate the freedom freelancing brings and respect it. And for those still juggling too much stress—give yourself permission to rest.
This is more than working for your self; it’s living for your self. Let’s remember that.
Rest in peace, Anna. Your story will not be in vain.
