How should one start on Upwork with zero clients or when someone gains new skills in different domain how do you pitch them without a portfolio?

Hey guys, I’ve been getting asked this question a bunch. I think it’s a matter of hiring yourself to obtain these skills. Imagine yourself as a client and you want to hire yourself to complete a specific task. This will accomplish 2 things.

1. You’ll make sure you know how to do the new thing that you’re trying to do.

2. You’ll have something at the end you’ll be able to add to your portfolio.

A lot of people think that portfolio items can only be used if they’re created for a client, but the fact is, portfolio items can be used without it being specifically made for a client.

You can even use it as your own personal case study. And now you can do a video of you learning the said skill.

A client would love to learn about how to acquired a new skill set and applied it towards your freelancing career. This will show them that you care, get to know you personally, and know that you can do the thing.

Clients don’t care about anything other than you being able to do what you say you can do, and by providing this info in your portfolio it will only help.
