Hey everyone! Tracy here i just read a debate on having one exclusive client vs many. Here’s something i’d like to share with everyone with my experience as copywriter. I’ll try to keep it short and precise.

One of the biggest misconceptions i see especially with those starting out is the idea of landing that one big client to solve all their problems. While a consistent anchor client is great but replying solely on once can be incredibly risky.

Think about it: what happens if that client’s budget changes? What if their needs shift? Suddenly you’re back at square one scrambling for work.

Instead i advocate for a diversified client portfolio. Here’s why:

    • Stability: Multiple smaller clients create a more stable income stream. If one pulls back, you’re not left in the lurch.
    • Skill Development: Working with different industries and client types broadens your skillset and makes you a more versatile freelancer.
    • Networking: Each client connection opens doors to more connections. Word-of-mouth referrals are gold!
    • Reduced Stress: Not putting all your eggs in one basket reduces the pressure and anxiety that comes with relying on a single source of income.

Now i’m not saying you shouldn’t pursue larger clients. Absolutely do! But build a foundation with several smaller ones first. It’s like building a strong house, you need a solid base.

You hit the bullseye even harder, Tracy.

Relying on one client can be detrimental to your income streams and might even take you back to zero (the trenches) if the client’s budget changes.

Hopefully, I won’t make this mistake again—we learn every day.
