Hi,
I’m María Belén, a Spanish SEO writer and translator
I’ve been a freelancer for some years now but can only get clients from Upwork. Not that I like the platform as it is but it’s difficult to get them somewhere else
It was there were I read about TOW and here I am trying to connect, learn and share experiences with fellow freelancers
-
Welcome Maria, how is the new client onboarding going? Have you tried Uma AI by Upwork?
-
Hi Adam,
No, I didn’t try it yet. And regarding new clients and offers things are pretty slow: I just get new projects from current clients, but not many
Not sure this is the right place to ask but this platform is only about Upwork? Also, is there a chance to having a Spanish community? I mean freelancing is not so common here so I think it would help us a lot to be in touch, apart from having contacts and share ideas with people all around the world

Offcourse we can have Spanish community, this is the world’s largest community of freelancers and everyone is welcome to join, participate and lead groups in here.
-
You didn’t answer the other part of Maria’s question. Is this platform only about Upwork?
You did say, it’s about freelancers, but didn’t mention the U word.¡Soy español!

I didn’t get a reply to my previous post
I am not clear whether this platform is only about Upwork? Or only for Upworkers? Or connected to Upwork.
You did say, it’s about freelancers, but didn’t mention the U word.
-
Hey Pete, this platform is for freelancers.. not specific to Upwork but as majority of the new members are coming from Upwork community or content that is related to Upwork hence you can see Upwork getting popped up everywhere.. however I do wish freelancers also explore more platforms and mediums to get new clients
-
Thanks for the clarification. I used to work for Upwork, but haven’t had to for some years now. I didn’t like it, and I got more clients on my own.
I am hoping to perhaps find people here to work with, as I may have some projects soon that I need help with.

This platform is all about freelancers. You can network, collaborate, share ideas, post jobs, ask for opinions, answer questions… basically live, love, laugh and work!!!

Tell us About Yourself!
Hi there! I’m Raji Musawir Olaitan, a passionate full-stack developer who loves turning complex problems into elegant web solutions. My expertise centers on the modern JavaScript ecosystem, particularly React.js, Next.js, and Node.js. Whether it’s crafting intuitive user interfaces or building robust backend systems, I thrive on delivering solutions that make a real difference. I’ve had the pleasure of working on diverse projects, from Chrome extensions that streamline workflows to sophisticated web scraping tools that help businesses gather valuable insights.
🎯 Current Focus & Goals:
I’m on a mission to push the boundaries of what’s possible in web development. Currently, I’m deepening my knowledge of performance optimization and scalable architecture while actively expanding my client portfolio. What really drives me is the opportunity to dive deep into clients’ challenges and engineer solutions that not only meet their immediate needs but set them up for future success. Looking ahead, I’m excited about exploring Web3 technologies while continuing to sharpen my full-stack capabilities.
Why I’m Here:
I joined this community because I believe in the power of shared knowledge and experience. There’s something incredibly valuable about connecting with fellow professionals who’ve walked similar paths. I’m eager to learn from others’ journeys, particularly around building strong client relationships and establishing a solid presence on platforms like Upwork. I believe that success in freelancing isn’t just about technical skills – it’s about understanding how to effectively communicate value and build lasting professional relationships.”
-
Hi Musawir, glad to have you here, if you can share your work in here it’d be great! What is the biggest challenge you are facing currently in terms of freelancing?
-
-
Hi all!
My name is Jessica and I’m a technical content writer specializing in developing standard operating procedures (SOPs), B2B SaaS user manuals, and technical content for websites.
I’ve been freelancing since 2018 and went full-time with freelancing in 2022. I’ve been an active member of the Upwork Community and hope to engage in the community here as it grows.
It’s nice to meet everyone!
-
Hey Jessica! Would you like to share how has your journey into full time freelancing been so far?
You can split that into 3 part : 1. Challenges 2. Benefits and 3. a dedicated section of tips of how are you finding new clients.
If you can share your portfolio or some work to showcase your skills.
-
It’s going pretty well so far!
1. Challenges
Initially, my challenges were knowing how and when to set boundaries with clients and also knowing when to say “no”. I’ve become better at both of those things. I’m still struggling to manage project-based clients. Scope creep comes up and I don’t really know how to address it so I end up putting in a lot more hours of work that what I initially budgeted for; that’s on me though and I need to learn how to bid project-based projects (retainers, too) better. I need to learn to speak up professionally when scope creep happens, but the only person who can do that for me is me!
2. Benefits
There are so many benefits to freelancing and I wish everyone did it so they could experience it. The biggest benefit is freedom and that comes in so many different forms — location freedom, schedule freedom, the freedom to choose with whom you want to work, the freedom to choose how much you get paid, etc. My life was really stressful before I started freelancing and there are still some stressful moments now, but I feel more in control because I don’t work for anyone. I work with people and set my own rules (which, as stated above, I could improve for project-based clients, but for hourly-based clients, it’s going just fine!).
3. Tips To Find New Clients
Always be looking for new clients. And I mean every day. Upwork is a great platform to find clients, but there are countless other platforms to use, too. Seek out opportunities every day and perfect your pitch/proposal. If you’re sending out a lot of proposals/pitches and not getting responses, you need to look inward and figure out how you can make it so a potential client wants to respond to your proposal. Learn some sales techniques and integrate them into your process for getting new clients. Freelancing is a business so to get new clients, you need to up your sales game.
A lot of people have set up systems where clients come to them. That’s amazing and clearly a lot less work than searching for new clients, but I have not set up that system yet. I probably will in the future but for now, I reach out to clients to get the ball rolling.

Thanks to Sagar for the warm welcome. My name is Kabiru, Muhsin Sanusi told me about the online worker.
He’s my classmate but we graduated last month, he used to organize a session in our department, and explain to our class what life would be after graduation.
He also incentivized that we all learn a skill and monetize it. I remember at the end of every session he use to recommend us to join the online worker, he said there are courses where we will learn how to succeed in freelancing.
I am overjoyed to be part of the online worker, I’m looking forward to learning from experts.

I am a US based paralegal with over 31 years experience. I joined Upwork around 2012. As I only work part-time, I am free to be quite choosey about clients (US attorneys ONLY). I tend to specialize in creating chronological summaries of medical records but I do other stuff as well, if needed. 100% of my clients are long-term. I don’t remember what else was asked but here I am anyway!
I am well past retirement age so freelancing has helped to pay my bills and to keep my brain from rotting. I also help my widowed son raise his 10 year old daughter and help my other son who had a debilitating stroke 2 years ago, so freelancing gets me out of my problems for a period. (Of course, freelancing also creates a whole different set of problems.)
I have been top-rated since it was invented, am currently TR+, never had a dispute, JSS at 100% except for a couple of weeks years ago. I am, of course, distressed about what’s been happening with UW and I truly pity anyway new with a legitimate concern/ question.
